Testing

I feel that testing within the school system has gotten a little out of hand. From the time a child starts Kindergarten until they reach their college career they are labled due to what they make on a test. As a teacher I find it hard to be able to actually assess what some of my students can truly due because if they do not due good on their Children's Progress and DIBELS assessments than it reflects back on me as a teacher so I am forced to focus more on lessons that reflect the tests. I also do not like how I am not able to be more creative with my teaching because their is so much to accomplish everyday time does not allow for it. I feel that teachers should be able to design tests for their students since they are with them everyday and know their learning and testing style more than just these random people who have barley even been in a classroom setting. I hope that things change for the better in the educational field.

  1. Time is the key to providing effective educational practices to children. I understand where you are coming from on you being creative in the classroom, because half of the time you are trying to prepare the children for various tests. My mother-n-law is a 7th grade English teacher and from the time schools begins her lesson plans are based on what will be on the state tests. I remember school as being a learning expereince, but also fun.

  2. I completely agree that testing is taking away from a teacher's ability to be creative and teach in the classroom. I work in a title one school where we have not 'made the grade' the last two years. Teachers now have to teach to the test starting from January until the state testing in March. It is such a shame how much testing has taken over the school sytem!

  3. Hi Stephanie,

Yes, we often find ourselves teaching to the test. What a sad demise for education. Sometimes I feel as if I am constantly testing my students. It seems as if all the enjoyment I use to find in teaching is slowly evaporating.
