My Standpoint On Communicating!!

So let me start off by saying that I did not expect to get accurate results from these quizzes and thought this assignment was pointless. After getting the results I have to say that I was completely wrong about the entire project!!! So I had my husband and my best friend since the 7th grade complete the quizzes on me because they know me VERY well and have been their for me through different aspects of my life. I was surprised that the quiz pointed out that I am uncomfortable communicating in certain situations and those situations would definitely be talking in front of a large group it petrifies me!! I have always had a fear of public speaking and as an adult it has not gotten any better. I was shocked to see that my husband and my best friend thought that I was good at this and had no fear of it.

I was also surprised to see that I am good at listening and communicating with others without attacking them because I strive to be this person. My husband and best friend scored me the same in this department as well. The only downfall is that I tend to get taking advantage of in some situations. Overall I enjoyed seeing the results of this test and others perspectives of me!

  1. Hi Stephanie - Isn't it funny how we see ourselves differently from others. Though it sounds like you have some awesome people in your life who totally get you. so thats good.

I also understand (unfortunately) about being taken advantage of in situations because of my communication style. Hopefully we can both overcome this.

  2. Hi Stephanie, it was interested too to see results from my husband and friend. As you mentioned, people percieve us differently than we do ourselves. As my husband tells me, sometimes he think I am too hard on myself. As far as taken advantage of, I can relate, he says I should speak up for myself a little bit more. Shocking!

From what I gather, it seems like most of us have to work on speaking up in large groups. I know for myself, as teacher and dealing with parents, Parent Conference, meetings with staff and so on, I am great and confortable, but it's larger groups, people of higher standards that I tend to shy from when speaking.

  3. I think sometimes we are harder on ourselves than others are, so these tests helped me to understand that I may actually be better at things than I thought, when looking through another's prespective. I think it is funny that so many of us have fears of public speaking. Why is that I wonder and where does it come from? I am sure we have all had speech classes in the past, but I guess it did not get out all of our anxieties.

  4. Hi Stephanie, I'm glad that you were pleasantly surprised by this assignment. I too am the Group 1 type. When it comes to communication anxiety, I ranked myself rather high, but others ranked me low. Hoever, the last time I spoke publicly I was visibly shaking... voice, hands everything! The only other time I shook that hard was right after an earthquake, that knocked me right out of bed, when I lived in Los Angeles. I am hoping that through this master's program we have gained and applied enough knowledge to be able to do it well in our work places. Thanks for your post.

  5. Stephanie,

Speaking in large groups has always been scary for me until I started working with so many families and colleagues.I honestly think that when you are passsionate about a particular subject or situation your anxiety goes away. Great post!
