Web Resources

The organization that I am following is the Children's Defense Fund. This website was important to me because it helps to ensure every child receives the education and health care they are entitled to. I teach in an area where I see a lot of children who are not properly cared for the way they should be and I would love to see this change within my own area. The thing that caught my attention on the website was the statistics that the website provides on each state and the areas they need improvement in. I was devasted to learn the high amount of students in Mississippi that are not able to read or do math on their grade level. The website encourages everyone to get involved with the future of our children and they support the research that when a child is cared for properly and taken out of poverty they are more likely to have a successful future. I think it would be neat to attend one of the Children's Defense meetings that are held each year, the next one will be held in Ohio. I also think it would be awesome if they could offer members of the organization to come around to speak to schools who are suffering from poverty. I think this would help everyone to want to get involved and make a difference for the future of our children.

  1. I too am continuing to follow and dive in the CDF's website. I agree that the enthusiasm of this website does make a person want to get and stay involved in some area of early childhood studies. You have a great idea of incorporating members who have experienced poverty to speak and offer motivation that can definitely make a positive difference in the future of our children, our families, and communities. Great post!

  2. Stephanie,
I found it interesting that even though you and Michelle chose the same web site what you each shared was different. It certainly shows how much information is available on the site. I have also looked at it and agree with both you and Michelle that it is distressing to read the statisitics about the number of children living in poverty. When I really think about that, I have a difficult time understanding how in our country where there are so many resources we have come to this. The disparity is not something we can be proud of. CDF is an organization that works very hard on many levels to close the gaps. As early childhood professionals it is important that we do whatever we can to improve the lives of the children and families we work with. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

  3. Because of your post, I am planning on checking out the web site to see about poverty statistics in my state of Connecticut, and the areas that need improvement here at home. Thank you for the information.

  4. Thanks for such a great resource. I am now able to learn more about my home state of Michigan and learn more about what I can do to help children in both my local community and the state.
